Family racing means family well-being
To the Danish family Kornum of four X-Yachts Gold Cup is the highlight of the summer holidays.
"When your 16 year old son just has become the world champion in windsurfing, it can be hard to catch his attention in a family race in the family’s cruising yacht with dad, mom, sister and some friends."
Nevertheless Sebastian Kornum a 16 year old windsurfer – just returned from the world championship for Slalom Windsurfing, the fastest discipline in windsurfing in Italy as “World Champion” - has enjoyed this week of yacht racing in the X-Yachts Gold Cup in the family’s five years old X-362, “Pryde”, with daddy Torben, mother Kirsten, sister Julie (18) and the family friends Christen and Christian Justesen plus Mia Nielsen.
They are in the middle of their summer cruising and have taken a break for the Gold Cup races, before they continue the cruising to the Swedish west coast.
“We have had a fantastic time at the X-Yachts Gold Cup and despite that our boat isn’t the youngest boat in the fleet (2003), we have been doing pretty well finishing as number three in our class“.
“And not even Sebastian and his windsurfing friend Christian had any complaints in the hard winds today that we didn’t carry a spinnaker”, says Torben Kornum. (In the Family Class neither spinnakers nor gennakers are allowed in the races).
“I am convinced that our children of 16 and 18 years of age wouldn’t have sailed with us, if we had a boat that didn’t sail so fast and was so fun to sail for everybody on board. My advice to other parents of sailing teenagers will be to make sure that you have a boat with enough challenge and appeal to younger people as well as to yourself”, says Torben Kornum.
