Read the report from Block Island Race Week 2003, written by US dealer Michael Frank.
Dr. Richard Shulman put his beautiful, new 2003 IMX 45 through her paces at this year’s Block Island Race Week.
However, step back a moment in time (10 days) and note as a tune-up for Race Week and the very first races sailed by “Temtress”, Dr. Shulman and his capable crew won his class in “The New York Yacht Club’s 149th Annual Regatta” held in Newport, Rhode Island. Over early in race one, “Temptress” climbed back to take a second in the thirteen boat division, IMS CR Green. The next two races in the three race series were won by Temptress by 4 & ½ and 5 & ½ minutes respectively over the second place boat. The division was comprised of Swans 48 & 55, J-44’s and J-145, Baltic 52, Custom Taylor 45, custom Judel Vrolich 51, and “Amadeus”, an IMX 40 sailed by Udo Schroff and crew, who tied for second place overall.
Back to Block Island and the incredible performance by Dr. Shulman and his IMX 45. “Temptress” raced in RED 4, IMS2/Level 40. “Temptress” was the sole racer/crusier in this 11 boat division. The week consisted of 7 races with one through-out. “Temptress” finishes were first, first, first, first, second (after over early and re-starting - just missed 1st by 6 seconds) and a final first for a total of 7 points. “Agincourt”, a custom Nelson/Marek 43 was second with 21 points. Dr. Shulman, a former Swan 51 and 44 owner, was all smiles after his amazing week. He commented that the feel and responsiveness of the IMX 45 was truly incredible and couldn’t find a weakness in her overall performance. He sailed with an all ‘asym’ North Sails inventory. It is note-worthy that “Temptress” has a laid teak cockpit, extra cabinety in main salon, two heads, water maker, two fuels tanks, inverter/charger and big batteries, all aboard for her during Race Week.
Congratulations to Richard Shulman and his crew for an outstanding job racing his new and very exciting IMX 45. Just think what the future holds when Dr. Shulman gets more experience with “Temptress”. On 6 July, “Temptress” started her first distance race, the 350 mile Marblehead/Halifax Race, we’ll keep you posted.
IMX 40 “Kiowa” First Overall, PHRF 3-42
“Kiowa”, sailed by Bob Sachs of Mamaroneck, NY and Waldek Zaleski of Z-Sails, Stamford, CT also had a great Block Island Race Week. The IMX 40 is not new to winning major regattas in Europe, but it is new in the U.S. The first two IMX 40’s, “Amadeus and Kiowa” in the U.S. are adding to the international prowess of this great racing boat. Mr. Sachs’ first major regatta was this years Key West Race Week where he finished Second Overall. One questionable tactical decision cost him the first place but second overall isn’t bad for this boats first major regatta.
At Block Island, “Kiowa” posted a 5th followed by an 2nd, three 1st and a 3rd in the last race for 13 points and a First Overall. The 13 boat class was extremely competitive with “Kiowa” the highest rated (slowest) boat in the division. She raced against a J-160 (54’), two new Farr 36’s, Farr 395, Swan 53 as well as other custom and one-offs. Congratulations to Bob Sachs and his crew for an outstanding performance at Block Island Race Week.
