The Golden Cup Badalona crowns its winners

Last weekend the 7th edition of the Golden Cup Badalona regatta was held at Port de Badalona, with the participation of 277 sailors distributed across 56 boats from 15 different yacht clubs. The competitive level and the size of the fleet represent the definitive consolidation of the format introduced in the previous edition, which brings together in a single event both the offshore cruising fleet specialized in long-distance races and the fleet of boats specialized in short-course racing.

The regatta took place in excellent weather conditions. The event kicked off on Friday, October 31, with the long race, consisting of a 60-mile Badalona–Blanes–Badalona route. On Saturday, November 1, the two scheduled short windward-leeward races were held with a steady medium-strength garbí wind. On Sunday the 2nd, the weather was more unstable, but the Race Committee showed patience and made the right call by delaying the start time until the wind stabilized, allowing the short coastal race to begin with a steady easterly wind.

The main stars of this edition were the duo Juan Company and Guillermo Altadill who, aboard Jau!, a J36 from the Real Club Náutico de Palma, claimed the Golden Cup Badalona Trophy as the best offshore team, showing great consistency with a second place in the long race and third in the short coastal one.

Meanwhile, Formula X, an X41 Race skippered by David Greene and Rodrigo Sanz, also from the Real Club Náutico de Palma, lived up to all expectations and honored its status as the reigning ORC cruising world champion—won this summer in Estonia—showing absolute dominance to take victory in the ORC 0-1-2 category after winning all the races held.

While the Náutico de Palma claimed two major victories, the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona was not far behind, earning two highly noteworthy wins: on one hand, the TP52 Aroproperties–Blue Carbon of Toni Guiu, winner of Group 1 of the Full-Crew Offshore fleet and also the real-time winner of the long race; and on the other, the Dutch team led by Jan Pieter Botman which, aboard Tramendu, a Dehler 36 JV, took the victory in the ORC 3-4 category.

With growing international participation, another Dutch team—this one led by Marten Jan Ringers of the Yacht Club Scheveningen aboard the X-35 Yellow Rose—was unable to revalidate the overall victory achieved in the last two editions, but finished on a high note by winning Group 2 of the Full-Crew Offshore category. Meanwhile, the Belgian team Diabolic, a Sun Fast 35 from the Royal Belgium Sailing Club, skippered by Glenn de Brouwer, claimed victory in Group 2 of the A2 and Solo crews.

The Salina category trophy, which rewards the best team composed of at least 50% women, went to Rateta, a Fortuna 9 co-skippered by Annya Crane and Martina Bernaban.

The event concluded late on Sunday afternoon, November 2, at the Hotel Marina Badalona, where the trophy ceremony was held. It was presided over by the Hon. Mayor of Badalona, Mr. Xavier García Albiol, accompanied in the speeches by Mr. Imanol Sanz, director of Marina Badalona, and Mr. Andrés Oliva, director of Enregata, the owner and organizer of the Golden Cup Badalona.
