Owner's Comments

I purchased "Great Expectations" in June 2020. I had always wanted an X-Yachts Xc 42 after reading some complementary reviews, I was also attracted by the ease of the Furlerboom in boom reefing system. The yacht seemed perfectly set up for cruising the west coast of Scotland where I intended to sail her.

We left Hamble Point Marina in early July and had an amazing overnight sail down Channel to Falmouth. The boat was brilliant and made 8-9 knots for the first 8 hours. We continued through some tricky conditions in the Irish Sea which she easily dealt with and eventually arrived in her new home at Troon Yacht Haven.

Since then we have enjoyed some wonderful weeks cruising the Firth of Clyde, Northern Ireland and the Scottish Islands. "Great Expectations" has been a delight to own and has coped with every difficult situation that she has faced. She is especially suited to cruising in northern climes and with a large water tank and heavy duty anchoring equipment she is not reliant on regular trips to the marina.

I will be sad to see her go, but limited free time and a lack of regular crew mean that it is time for someone else to take her into the next stage of her life.

Exterior Details

Hull

• The Xc 42 is built to comply with the requirements specified by the European Union’s Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) to meet Design Category A – ‘Ocean’.
• White Hull with Grey Waterlines - polished June 2026
• Coppercoat applied 2019
• Stainless steel rail protection on sheerline.
• New skin fittings, seacocks and hose tails in summer 2026. (in progress)

Deck

• Teak in cockpit, on side decks, coachroof and bulwarks. Borocol treatment in October 2025.
• Fixed cockpit table, with space for plotter, and sorage in middle.
• Grabrail on the end of the cockpit table.

Mast & Rigging

• Fractional double spreader, tapered silver anodized aluminium mast stepped on steel frame, designed and engineered for Xc 42.
• Rod rigging throughout. Last official NDT inspection in May 2020.
• Furlerboom system for mainsail including boom topping lift. (Spare main furl line supplied loose.)
• Tricolour and anchor lights.

Keel

• The keel draft is a 2.10 m cast iron fin with an antimony hardened lead L-bulb bolted and glued to cast iron fin for high strength, low centre of gravity and comfortable sailing performance.
• Keel is encapsulated in three layers of GRP and faired to original keel section templates.
• The keel structure consists of a hot galvanised, high strength steel frame which forms an integral part of the hull structure. It is capable of absorbing loads from keel, mast and rig as well as shock loads in the event of grounding. Integrated limber holes to allow water to run to central keel bilge.
• The keel structure also has an integrated single point centre hoist for easy and safe lifting and launching.
• Rudder Bearings last replaced April 2024.

Systems

Engine

• Volvo Penta D2-55 4-cylinder, direct injection diesel engine.
• Engine hours - 1001 hrs correct June 2026.
• Engine saildrive gaiter seal replaced May 2025.
• Custom engine throttle control mounted on binnacle for ease of use.
• The engine is fitted with a 12V / 115A alternator for charging the engine start and domestic batteries.
• 3 Blade folding propeller, with rope cutter installed.
• Fuel is stored in a custom-built aluminium tank, located under the port aft berth. The tank is fitted with an inspection hatch, baffles, deck filler, breather and gauge. Total fuel capacity is 250 litres

Plumbing

• Automatic shower bilge pump.
• Seawater tap with electrical pump, and second outlet at bow.
• Eberspächer D5 heater w/outlets throughout. Serviced 2025.
• Electrical toilet, with large bowl in both heads, each with 55 litre plastic holding tank
• A deck shower with hot and cold water in the cockpit.
• Fresh water is stored in 2 custom-built stainless steel tanks, located below the main cabin floor boards.Total water capacity is 520 litres with backup foot pump
• A 40 litre calorifier is situated in the engine room.
• All bilges, with the exception of the engine room bilge, are piped through limber holes to a central sump above the keel. This central sump is pumped out with an automatic electric pump and a manual pump in the cockpit

Electrical

• X-Yachts main switch board with automatic (re settable) fuses, 3 analogue VDO meters monitoring fresh water and fuel levels and a battery monitor.
• All cabling terminates in “dry” GRP box fitted behind main electrical panel for safety.
• The shore power system consists of a 10A shore power inlet socket in the cockpit, 230V AC distribution box, 240V AC GB sockets throughout and Galvanic isolator.
