We have really enjoyed sailing such a very special yacht, having sailed her, as a couple in the Baltic, the south coast of England, the Brittany coast and of course all around the Channel Islands.
Before buying Elixir, we had considered our sail wardrobe carefully. As we are in our 70s and sail without crew, we decided that our spinnaker handling days were over. Discussion with North Sails resulted in the safe option of a furling Code 1. We rig the furling line back to the cockpit so it is easy to furl without the need to go on deck. We crossed the Channel, Cherbourg to the Hamble, earlier this year with the Code 1 up – a wonderful sail, having fun with the security of retrieval.
We have previously owned both Westerly and Sadler Yachts with cruising speeds of 5-6 knots. The 7 knots offered by Elixir has been comfortably achieved and exceeded on many occasions. This yacht is “calm”! Calm whilst we hoist sails and sort ourselves out, calm if we hove to, calm as we sail.
We chose the shallower 1.68m keel which suits our marina gate. This keel is specifically designed, as you would expect from X-Yachts and we have had no problems with her sailing ability.
The cockpit is secure, we like the 2 wheel arrangement and find it easy to move from one to the other. We have made very good use of the easy push-button autohelm and the electric winch!
Cleaning a yacht may not be the top of everyone’s list of Fun Chores but somehow it has never felt a chore with Elixir. The drainage holes actually work, the teak and gel coat are of a quality that really respond to even the smallest brush up.
It has been a hugely emotional decision to sell such a beautiful yacht, we know we shall miss not only her but also being part of the X-Yacht family. They have both looked after us so well.
